Update: Cycle 1, Day 5

Just a quick update. 

This week has been a little tougher than anticipated, with all sorts of mainly abdominal discomfort – due in large part to the chemo drugs and also the build up of fluid (ascites).  Apparently this build up is likely to subside after the second round of chemotherapy (in 2 weeks’ time). 

Harry, the kids and the whole family are being amazing – and, all the positive wishes, love and care which have been forthcoming make it easier to focus on “getting through”.

Sending you so much love. I had the joy of seeing a number of your offspring this afternoon. You were missed but I hope that you are doing all you can to manage the discomfort and just get through as best you can.

Last chemo – hooray!! I have finally arrived at my 6 th and final chemo session! It has been a journey in the true sense…I have learned so much along the way about myself and others – and I have been pleasantly surprised at how manageable  (for the most part) the whole experience has been. I have found hidden reserves of resilience that I didn’t know I had…and this has been enabled by my darling, long suffering husband Harry and our wonderful family, as well as all the friends who have offered so much support and comfort along the way. I can never thank you all enough.     As usual, I had a downhill slump (‘flu-like’ aches and pains, extreme exhaustion) post chemo. I think that it is now taking me an extra day or two to recover… however I have been told that this is to be expected, given the cumulative effect of the chemo. Nevertheless, knowing how long it will take for the side effects to abate…and knowing that the improvement is not far away makes the ‘slump...

As many of you will be aware, I have spent most of the last 2 weeks having tests and scans in an endeavour to find the source of my cancer. I had presented to my GP (my darling husband Harry) with a bloated tummy – which turned out to be full of fluid (ascites), a sign that I had cancer somewhere in my body. My very capable and caring physician, Robert Lefkovits, managed the workup, until we finally discovered that it is an ovarian tumour that has spread to the lining of my abdomen (the peritoneum). It is classified as stage 3 ovarian cancer. Fortunately there has been no spread to any other organs. Our cousin David Goldstein from Sydney, who many of you know is an experienced oncologist, advised that the best team we could have working with us is Oncologist Dr. Linda Mileshkin and Surgeon Prof. Orla McNally. I was very fortunate to have met with them without delay. They are all I could hope for….empathic, but matter of fact. I never feel like I am rushed with them...

Post surgery update

It's Harry here writing the next blog instalment. Well the big day arrived. We woke at 5.30am and had breakfast because Robyn had to fast from 6am. We caught a cab to Francis Perry House where she had blood tests and was then admitted to the ward. After a long wait surgery commenced at 2.30pm. While she was in theatre Rebecca and I walked to Brunetti on Lygon Street and had cake and coffee. When we returned Lynne Frid came and kept us company. The cake was ordinary… Lynne was lovely. Robyn found surgery to be a breeze (mind you she was asleep) and returned to her room at 6pm to the smiling faces of Rebecca and me. She was quite drowsy but in no pain. She kept repeating questions over and over. Amazing what drugs do to you. Beck and I left at 7.30pm and apparently Robyn slept well all night drifting in and out of a drug induced coma.
